What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine, first proposed by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in 1796, in which practitioners use highly diluted preparations. Based on “the law of similars “ formulated by Hahnemann, preparations which cause certain symptoms in healthy individuals are given in diluted form to patients exhibiting similar symptoms.
Apart from the symptoms, homeopaths use aspects of the patient’s physical and psychological state in recommending remedies. Homeopathic reference books known as repertories are then consulted, and a remedy is selected based on the totality of symptoms.
How does homeopathy work?
Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body’s own healing power. This power is very great and many complaints heal themselves unaided; but when the healing process is faulty, blocked or slow, the homeopathic remedy in the correct dosage acts as a stimulus to the curative powers of the body.
